It was completely unintentional and unplanned but Gijon will forever be special, the place where I made landfall after my first solo Biscay crossing.
The welcome from the natives will also for ever be etched on my heart.
First there was the church service complete with bagpipes… | ![]() |

Then the erection of a statue in my honour |
…and finally the fireworks….
… these went on late into the night, I had to slip away embaressed by all the attention – as usual Gijon partied on till 4am, – anyone who has been there will know that I do not exaggerate !
Well you did discover Spain so it is only right the natives put a welcoming show on for you.
What a lovely ceremony; sorry we were otherwise engaged 🙂 xx
Haha, what a honour
