The Eastern Caribbean is a seismically active area with hundreds of earthquakes occurring in and around the region each year. So here we are in Port Louis Marina, Grenada…when…an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 rocked sections of Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada this morning.

The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine campus reports that the epicentre of the quake, with a depth of 85 kilometres, was located 5 kilometres South South west of Irapa, Venezuela. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

The next crew member to join up was a rather geeky and long nosed Annie Descharts. She presented herself one afternoon as I ordered my second Planters Punch in the notorious Doolittle’s Bar. The bar itself claimed to be the location for the film of the famed Doctor and his powers over animals. A power which I mused would be very useful when confronting crew.

Well, you will appreciate that I have been busy. Livin la vida loca is not as easy as you may think!

Back to the future..

Well, it is almost time for the long lonely walk out of the tunnel and onto the field of play. We depart on Wednesday 18th at 1100, and assemble outside the harbour for the start at 1200. The past week has been a blur of fantastic seminars – notably from JC himself – as well as some other excellent speakers.

Cornell–Atlantic Odyssey

Most of the past week has been spent moving stuff from one place to another and back again trying to get some order in the boat. The aft cabin is still upside down – waiting for “Marco” the Italian repair man to come and fit the autopilot. He did send me a quote when he opened it up for almost 4 boat bucks!…we then met up for a man to man chat – he actually is a lovely guy – we agreed on 2.5 boat bucks. Saturday 31st. Still getting used to dry land, and nursing a hangover! I had a nice rest in Oeiras, and managed to do plenty of walking. A couple of times I did the very pleasant pedestrian promenade covering the 10km to Alges, before succumbing and getting the bus the remaining 10km to Lisbon. I even walked the route on the day of the Lisbon Marathon – and was happy to be handed a bottle of water by one of the officials who must have thought I had entered in some strange fancy dress.

I was in two minds whether to split my journey to Oeiras, near Lisbon, in two. Eventually after a heated debate with the crew – and some quite robust words – I decided that discretion was the better part etc. and I would break the passage up at Peniche.

Boat lift…


After having arrived on Friday 2nd – the boat yard managed to fit in the lift out today. They also don’t look too happy about the timing belt change. I thought that would be the case. The same situation happened in 2011 at Gosport Boat Yard in the UK.

The belt change, especially the main timing belt, is a real “£$%. Moody in their wisdom placed the head of the engine roughly 20 cm from the bulkhead that houses the fuel tank. The only access is from above – by climbing into the engine compartment. In order to see
